M-16 lack of reliability is a myth. There were political interests that didn't want the weapon to succeed, welfare of US troops notwithstanding, so troops issued with them were told that they NEVER had to be cleaned. In reality, you can drag them through mud and dust and muck all day, and they will still shoot if you covered them like you're supposed to.
Complicated to use? load the gun, pull back the bolt, bang theyre dead. Hit the release and the clip drops on its own. just slide a new one in.
The AK and M-16 actually have similiar reliability in all areas but 2. First, the AK wears out quicker because of its loose, cut-corners Russian design (the very reason its so cheap) Second is jamming. When an AK has a jamming problem you have to pry open the chamber and find a way to remover the round. M-16, don't even take your eyes off the target. Just jam youre hand against the advance and slap it on the side. That will correct 90% of firing problems.
Besides, youre comparing TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT WEAPONS SYSTEMS! Kalashnikov doesn't even build a weapon with the purpose of the M-16 that I'm aware of. The AK is an Assault Rifle. It spreads lead and death here, there and everywhere. The M-16 is a Main Battle Rifle. It is built to be used by a capable soldier to take out the enemy in the open and suppress them in cover. Case in poing: the fire-selector on the The M-16 has its positions in the order:
safe, semi, auto
the AK has its positions in the order: Safe, Auto, Semi
The M-16 suppresses and eliminates, the AK massacres, and they're both the perfect weapon for their job.
As to the M-1, where do ya'll get you're info? 8 Round clip. The M-1 does not need more. It is not a suppression weapon, it is a killing weapon. Modern soldiers in Iraq often still have a couple of M-1s per squad. The SAWs and other rifles can suppress, but when the enemy bunkers down, an M-1 means the difference between a trench-war and a blitzkreig. Again, we're talking weapons with entirely different roles.
Also FYI, the Ding sound is when it automatically ejects the clip, it is not loud enough for anyone but the user to hear in a firefight, but it makes sure you'll never run out of ammo without knowing it. The sound it makes when you insert a new one is a quiet shlack of the cover sliding shut. The only real weakness is how hard it is to mount a sight. (also M-1 bite, but c'mon, it hurts the target worse:))
Oh yeah, the Ak weighs more (a lot) than the M-16 and the M-1 weighs more than both put together.
Sometimes I forget that can be restrictive for some users (course i don't really think any 120 lb users should be using an AK either :) )
8 rounds versus 6 rounds= 2 round difference, it still won't suppress well in a firefight, and when you're a private, going up against german infantry that are using MP-40s and your wall for cover is 10 feet away from theirs, I'm pretty sure the garand isn't what you want for that situation.
Medium distance against targets out in the open: Garand is probably the ultimate weapon for that situation
long distance: ehhh.....you're using a combat rifle, not a sniper rifle, better than a machine gun but don't expect to hit every time
short distance: If you can get your first shot off before them and that shot hits than yeah, you're good, but if you miss that first shot and the other guy gets to fire a fully automatic weapon you're pretty much screwed.
Your getting a lot of these things backwards though.
quick rundown:
M-16 = medium range in open.
AK-47 = short-medium range suppression and killing unarmed enemies.
Garand = Great for killing SUPPRESSED opponents. German soldier behind a wall with mp-40 at a hundred yards can't hit s**t. same with AK but AK's firepower makes up some of that range. Meanwhile, the Garand user can just keep squeezing off rounds into the German guys wall. I don't care what range, short of sniper distance that wall is going to be crumbleing... fast
Also M-1, like most American weapons, has an incredible reload speed. If you don't mind your thumb getting jammed by the bolt, you can literally just stuff a new clip in there. It does everything else for you.
Again, it also depends on the user. The AK is going to do pretty much the same amount of damage at 150 yards with a south american guerilla as with an Israeli spec-ops. Garand is going to do NOTHING for an itallian, everything for a
US Marine.
Right, but i didn't say 100 yards, i said 10 feet, huge difference there.
It doesn't matter how powerful the garand is at a range, in CQB the guy with the shotgun or sub machine has a much higher rate of winning.
Why? becuase it doesn't take a huge ass bullet to take someone down at close range. in CQB, body armor or not, a shotgun blast is at the very least going to knock on your ass, if not rip your insides to shreds. and getting riddled by lots of pistol bullets being fired at an automatic rate from a sub-machine gun isn't going to feel too pretty either.
Overall: MP7 vs Garand.
Long range: Garand
Medium range: More than likely Garand
CQB: MP7 is much better in CQB.

In fact that was the reason for the Thompson smg. M-1 can't compete at spear-range because it isn't even the right type of system.
I'm just saying it would be good for the church to be able to get a few M-1s and AR-15s, maybe convert the ARs into full M-16s. Just for some extra killing power at medium-long range.
i like the ideas of the church having some M1s, some garands and perhaps a few carbines.
