I can understand where you're coming from, certainly. At first glance, and indeed, even were I to test it myself, I would probably hold much the same view.
There are, however, some things to be wary about with European firearms.
Weight: 3.6 kg as opposed to the M-16s 2.89.
Effective Range: reads 500 yards as opposed to 600, not a huge difference, but the M-16 does this with iron-sights as opposed telescopic (what is it with Europeans and scopes?) This means that the FN forces the user to effectively "zone out" when firing at long range and thus reaquire the target each time they fire.
You mentioned reliability. I wouldn't know, it just sounds problematic. Remember that the the extra weight is still with a lot of plastic, whereas the M 16 uses either metal or advanced alloy.
Cost: Again, one of those Euro things. While a well-kept AR-16 sells for as little as $750 and can be given automatic fire for next-to-nothing, an FN starts at $2200 (quote from a local gun show)
That being said, the FN has great balance, great heat characteristics (comfortable to shoot) a wonderfully well-designed grip set-up. Everyone who uses one raves about its balance and fit.
Overall, maybe neither an SMG or an Assault Rifle. Probably a great Carbine if you can afford it.

Did some research and you are right Nysob. Still I don't agree with your scope vs. iron sight idea. Mainly because scopes provide better accurracy. Also the gun is somewhat futuristic and the perfect gun for the military for specialized missions.
I agree that a scope is more accurate. (wow, did I really just say that?)
I'm just pointing out that a scope increases the theoretical effective range of a weapon, but in a firefight, you don't always wanna lean out from cover long enough to sight one. So in actual battle, the ER becomes deceptive.
For special-ops (its target audience) the FN-2000 is a great weapon. It combines a tremendous ambush effectiveness with a versatility that can only be gained through creative use of modules (being one of a very few guns to allow enough for Spec-Ops) I just wanted to make sure that people were informed on its true role as a Spec-Ops Carbine so I wouldn't have to cringe through a mis-allocated weapon in a game this good.
